Male Breast Reduction
What is Male Breast Reduction?
Excessive fat or glandular tissue in the male breast (gynecomastia), in adolescents and older men is much more common, than is acknowledged. An estimated 40 – 60 percent of men suffer from this condition, (affecting either one or both breasts) at some time in their lives. A number of men who are aware and embarrassed by this condition often find it difficult to admit to the problem to anyone else, including the surgeon. However it must be understood, that, surgical correction of this condition is possible, and more commonly carried out than is publicised. Following surgery, most men experience an improved body shape and enhanced self confidence.
The cause of gynecomastia is not well understood, but it is suspected hormonal changes often play a role. Anabolic steroids that contain oestrogen, marijuana use and prescribed hormones are sometimes a factor that plays a significant role in this condition. Massive, sudden, weight loss can also result in hanging breasts that detract from a masculine appearance.
The primary criteria for undergoing this surgery is being a healthy, emotionally stable male, with the condition persistent and stable, for a significant period of time. This is not a weight loss surgery for obese individuals and is not performed on excessively overweight people, who are not willing to first try a proper diet and exercise regime, to address their weight issue.
This is a surgery to remove excessive fat and/or glandular tissue from the male breast. The amount of fat and tissue within the breasts, determine the surgical approach to address the problem.
When the enlargement is primarily due to fatty tissue, liposuction alone may correct the problem. If very large amounts of fat have to be removed, some skin may have to be excised, to create a new tighter shape. This may be done at a later stage after the initial results have been evaluated.
If the enlargement is primarily due to dense glandular tissue, surgery to excise the same will be required.
