Hair Replacement Surgery
What is Hair Replacement Surgery?
A full head of hair is usually associated with vitality and youth. In all cultures great attention is given to the condition, care and grooming of hair. Hair loss is a common condition that can be deeply troubling both in men and women. In women hair loss is usually associated with aging, illness or menopausal hormonal changes.
While there are a number of topical and oral ,off the counter lotions and medications to supposedly treat hair loss, most of them are either ineffective or only result in reducing further hair loss. Even these work only on mild to moderate hair loss. Severe hair loss or balding can in most cases be treated only with hair replacement surgery. Methods of hair replacement have advanced rapidly in the last 5 years and today there are a number of effective methods of hair replacement.
Hair replacement surgery is a procedure to repopulate the bald or very sparse areas of the head with hair that is either transplanted or surgically draped skin with pre existing hair follicles. There are a number of methods of hair replacement. Sometimes a combination of such procedures is recommended for best results. The technique chosen depends upon existing hair growth, size of area to be treated, degree of result desired and the amount of scarring that can be tolerated.
Types Of Hair Replacement Surgery
- Hair Transplant : involves removing hair bearing scalp from a donor site on the head to a bald or thinning area. The techniques that are available are micro, min, punch or strip grafts. The technique to be employed is chosen based on individual considerations. Transplantation is carried out in one session or in multiple sessions depending on the area to be treated and the amount of correction required.
- Hair bearing scalp from a donor site on the head is removed and moved to a bald or thinning area on the scalp. The donor sites are usually on the back or side of the head. Round shaped punch grafts contain about 10 to 15 hairs each; mini grafts contain about 2 to 4 hairs and micro grafts contain 1 to 2 hairs. In the case of slit grafts, slits are created in the scalp and grafts containing about 4 to 10 hairs are inserted into them. Strip grafts are long and thin and contain 30 to 40 hairs each. During a hair transplant mega session 1000 to 2500 micro or mini-grafts of the patient’s own hair can be inserted. Using these numerous tiny grafts, the plug like look and scarring associated with earlier techniques and can create a natural looking hairline.
